Auditioning for a Pop/Rock Musical – From a Music Director’s Perspective
A little bit about me: In addition to running a voice studio and being an Equity Actor, I have music directed several pop/rock musicals including Mamma Mia! and 9 to 5. The following is my personal experience (and thoughts) – trust your gut! I’m preparing to music direct Escape to Margaritaville this summer at Candlelight (Auditions are April 7 & 8) and I found myself answering the same questions to several of my clients.

The show is announced – Listen to everything you can that is released and look up a synopsis of the show. We live in the age of the internet and it’s easy to find resources. Listen to the original artists of the material. Note that many of the musical versions of your favorite songs are in higher keys.

Find your material – I would recommend preparing pop/rock songs instead of songs from a pop/rock musical – this allows you more freedom with the material and with the vocal range. As you listen to the original artists, play around with various keys of the songs – aim for your vocal “sweet spot.” This is when it vocally feels easy and flowing. Try to tailor your material towards a specific character you’d like to be considered for. If the character you want needs vocal range, show vocal range.

Actor first – Many casting directors have various opinions on this – I like to see your interpretation of the material as a character inspired by the show you are auditioning for. Otherwise you are just standing and singing a pop song.
